This business run a successful, high volume, fast moving palletised night cross-dock operation, an operation that they need you to take full responsibility for, including all costs and making all the big decisions. You’ll lead a team of 6 who, in turn, will manage a total workforce of 200, setting the expectations around performance and quality. You’ll work closely with the board on strategic initiatives to drive the business forward – you won’t be coming into a business where everything is already done, there is plenty of scope to influence change and make improvements – the business is growing at pace so needs it’s operation to be able to cope with increased volume and demands. One of the first jobs you’ll have is to hire a depot/hub manager to lead the night operation so, in the short term, as well as undertaking a strategic role you’ll also need to be willing to get stuck in on the night operation itself to address any issues or implement any changes you want to make. The expectation is that, even once you’ve hired this person, you’ll still be a visible presence in the operation, although it will be down to you to decide how often and when!
Development and mentoring of people is a key focus of this business. You’ll be expected to take personal responsibility for coaching and developing your team, ensuring you are building a pipeline of succession. Culture and attitude is vital to the success of this organisation and that is driven from the top, namely you as far as operations is concerned.
