Commodity Manager

What will you be doing?

You’ll be taking the lead on a £20m (all influenceable) spend across a range of commodities, currently including production consumables, packaging and facilities management (however this is open to discussion).  You’ll have cradle to grave responsibility for the strategic management of your area, developing short, medium and long term plans to present to senior level stakeholders for sign-off before you go and deliver!  You’ll utilise 8-step sourcing to identify the needs, suppliers and SLA’s to deliver a best in class procurement solution for your stakeholders.  There is no in-house legal team within this organisation so you’ll be expected to put together robust contracts for supply from existing templates.  You’ll manage the relationships with your suppliers (mostly UK based), monitor their performance and ensure the business is delivering their side of any agreements.


Who will you be doing this for?

This business is a long established top dog in their particular market.  The industry they are in is flying at the moment, to the point where they are struggling to keep up with the demand!  The procurement team is a small one (4 including you if successful) which means you get lots of exposure to the inner workings of a procurement team in a successful medium sized organisation.  They are a firm believer in investing in their people, including supporting professional qualification such as CIPS – this is one of the reasons that they have a very low staff turnover, people stay because they feel valued and invested in.  They are private equity owned, which has seen significant investment over the last couple of years, resulting in a number of acquisitions being made to further strengthen their market leading position.  The other beauty of being a PE owned business is that there is little in the way of red tape when it comes to getting things done and making changes to benefit the business.


What do you need to bring to the table?

To be successful in this role it’s expected that you’ll be able to demonstrate the majority of the following skills and experience:

  • Proven experience of full strategic commodity/category management from cradle to grave – this will include creation of commodity/category strategy and roll out
  • CIPS qualified or equivalent is a bonus but not essential
  • Outstanding communication skills – able to build rapport and influence at all levels of a business, both internally & externally
  • Genuine self starter – you’ll be someone who takes the lead and gets stuff done
  • Full driving license – you’ll need to get out and meet your suppliers on a needs must basis
